There are a few different ways to address the need to regulate the data that flows from the wild internet into your clean, controlled network. One of the tried and true methods for accomplishing this is to utilize a proxy server that all client workstations will have to channel their traffic flow through as they communicate with the outside world. If you have ever gone into the tools, options and connection settings in your web browser, you will see there is a field for a proxy server address, a proxy server port number and the version of the proxy, i.e., socks version. This is where the use of a proxy server is initiated by instructing the web browser to direct traffic through the proxy server.
This setting can be input manually by the computer user or by an enforced policy from a domain server. If the domain server controls the entry of the proxy server settings, they will not be changeable by the computer user. Also, domain policies typically cannot influence the settings on third party browsers because they are outside the control of system group policies. However controlled, the settings isolate the computer from directly connecting any servers that exist on the internet. All traffic is address through the proxy server, and as such the proxy server makes the connections to internet sites on behalf of your computer and its browser.
In doing so, the proxy server is able to protect the client by never passing on any harmful communications. Harmful can mean infected, such as viruses, or intrusions that take advantage of vulnerabilities on the endpoint computer that can allow hackers access to the files on the machine. Because the computer never directly contacts anything beyond the proxy server, it remains far safer than if direct connections were allowed.
