All of us have heard about patches and its advantages for computers. Patches are created as loopholes are found in the software of the computers. Application and system software are constantly being attacked by malicious programs and patches are the only answer against them. Just recently, the term patch management has been coined which gives a whole new meaning to the concept of patches.
Patch management is the systematic deployment of patches and this concept is mostly used when a large scale installation of patches is required. As the attacks against the network and the operating systems picked up, so did the concept of patch management and companies began to hire patch experts who would assist in the patch management.
Generally, patch management is used to solve the glitches in the software installed in the computers. The patch management is a streamlined process which is used by many companies now in order to safeguard their computers. The process has many different stages.
The first stage is used to identify the problem and the loophole within the system. Once a loophole is found by the software, it will then automatically create a patch in order to solve it. This patch then flows through the patch management process and is tested for to see whether it works or not. After the patch has been deemed fit, patch management software is then used by both the software company and the target organization in order to properly receive the patch.
Once the patch is received properly, it is installed for the specific loophole and fixing it. Patch management software is used to automate this process and remove the manual aspect of this process. As the patch management cycle runs, the software becomes intelligent and will send and receive any update or patches to the target system or computer.
Patch management has become a necessity in a world where there is an increased threat from computer viruses and hackers. Any company or organization that has a robust patch management program will not suffer the kind of damage that other companies without a patch management program would.
Patch management reduces the risk of attacks as any developing loophole is fixed very quickly with the help of internet and direct updates. The patch management process is an evolving process with more upgrades and improvements to make in the future in order to compete with ever changing attacks.
