Can a Military Member Speed Up the Review of His or Her Social Security Disability Application?

Q: If you are approved for disability benefits through the VA, will you automatically be approved for social security disability benefits?
A: You will not automatically be approved for social security disability benefits when you are approved for VA benefits. Unlike Veterans Administration benefits, social security disability is not designated via percentages. Social Security Disability Insurance is awarded fully or not at all. Your injury or condition cannot be assigned a rating like it is with the VA. Because of this, you may not receive social security disability even if you receive VA benefits.
Q: Will the SSA contact the Veterans Administration for your records when you submit an application for disability insurance?
A: The SSA will not necessarily be able to obtain your VA records in a timely manner. Whenever you file your social security disability application, you would be wise to obtain a copy of your VA medical file and give it to the representative assigned to your claim. Have duplicate copies of everything. Give the SSA one set and keep the other for yourself. This just makes it easier, if the SSA misplaces something from your records.
Q: As a veteran, is it possible to speed up your disability claim with Social Security?
A: A military member who applies for social security disability can expedite the review process. Only those who provided active duty service since October 1, 2001 are eligible to expedite the review process. Under a new partnership between the Department of Defense and Social Security, all qualifying veterans who submit an application will be given expedited service. Check with the examiner assigned to your social security disability case to get an update regarding where your application is in the review process. It might be helpful to obtain assistance from a social security lawyer, if you are having difficulty trying to expedite your claim.
